Ganderbal, Dec 13 (KNO): The residents of Gadoora area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have voiced their growing concerns over the deteriorating condition of Nallah Sindh that has become increasingly polluted. “The Nallah has transformed into a dumping ground for garbage, with illegal constructions along its banks exacerbating environmental degradation. The accumulating waste, combined with encroachments, has not only marred the beauty of the river but also poses serious health and sanitation risks to the local community,” the local residents told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). “We used to play near the river when we were children, but now it’s a shame to see it in such a state. The garbage and encroachments have made it impossible to enjoy its natural beauty,” said Aftab Ahmad, a local resident. “If immediate action isn’t taken, this waterway will soon be completely destroyed.” The residents are urging local authorities to take immediate action to clean and dredge Nallah Sind, with hopes of restoring its ecological integrity. They believe that proper management of the Nallah would not only enhance its natural beauty and functionality but also mitigate flooding risks, improve water quality, and significantly reduce health hazards caused by the growing waste pile-up. Mushtaq Ahmad told KNO that the garbage and filth along the river are attracting diseases. “We need to restore the Nallah to protect our health and the environment. The authorities have to step in now, before it’s too late,” he said. In addition to the pollution concerns, the encroachments along the Nallah have severely restricted its flow, exacerbating environmental issues. The encroachment of the banks has led to the narrowing of the river, which hinders its natural course and contributes to further ecological damage, they said. Another local told KNO that “we have seen the flow of water in the Nallah decreasing drastically over the years due to encroachments. If nothing is done, the Nallah will no longer be able to serve its purpose, and that will affect all of us.” The demand for dredging and effective river management underscores the community's commitment to restoring Nallah Sindh to its original state, ensuring it serves both its ecological function and the needs of the local population. As the situation becomes increasingly urgent, the residents hope that their calls for action will be met with swift intervention from the authorities to protect this crucial natural resource—(KNO)
